Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (various)

Post by Primal Fear »

This profile actually only makes the triggers working and makes the movement on the left stick more comfortable. But I also offer config files for download that are preconfigured for either the original wired Xbox360pad, the wireless Xbox360pad (also works for other Xinput compatible controllers as well as the Speedlink XEOX) or Thrustmaster Run'N'Drive models (long handles, wheel around D-Pad).

Config files
Simply open the main folder of the game and override the original prefs.dat with the downloaded prefs.dat. Now when you open the game you should check the "Video" settings and change them to your preferences. You may also want to have a look into the "Sound" and "Game" settings.

This is the first time I've tried using xpadder and I can't get this to work. I copy in the pref.dat file, load the profile in xpadder and when I start the game and I am able to control Westhouse none of the controls work except for the right trigger for focus mode.

If the triggers are working, then Xpadder works fine. The other trigger is for sneaking, but I'm not sure if this movement was implemented for Brian Westhouse as it would be pretty useless.

You have a problem with the native controller support of the game. My prefs.dat is basically a preconfigured for the Xbox360pad, so you don't need to do that yourself in the game.
The reason for your problem is probably that your Xbox360pad isn't selected as your preferred device in the Game Controller Control Panel of Windows. To change that press Windows Key+R, type joy.cpl and press Enter. In the opening window click on the button "Advanced..." and select the Xbox360pad. Close all windows with OK and it should work.

Thanks for the reply. I don't think you can sneak during that section either. I went into the Game Controller Panel like you said and my xbox360 controller is the preferred controller, it's the only controller in fact. I started up Dreamfall again and it's still not working.

OK, actually this was only guess I was pretty sure with. I checked this myself with three controllers connected and the preferred device setting doesn't have any effect.

On all three of my controllers the buttons work, but the sticks and the D-Pad work only on the original Xbox360pad.
If you look on the bed that stands next to Brian in the "start position" by pressing A, you have placed my prefs.dat correctly and it is working.
In that case I suppose that you have a wireless Xbox360pad and the game distinguished it from my wired controller. That means you need to configure the sticks and the D-Pad yourself under Options->Pad. Click there on "Movement Stick" and do what the game tells you. Not that you need to hold the stick for a while until the game tells you to release it, so in opposite to Xpadder.
And now do the same for the other stick and the D-Pad, of course.

I do have a wireless controller. I guess that is the problem then. The face buttons don't work, so I can't press A to examine things. I can only assure you that I did copy the pref.dat file into the Dreamfall directory. With xpadder running it looks like I can use the triggers, allowing me to use sneak. Then I can just set up the other controller settings within the game allowing me to use all buttons. Thanks for your help.

If the face buttons doesn't work correctly, you didn't place my prefs.dat on the correct place as the difference only affects the sticks.
There had to be a original prefs.dat that you had to override.

They didn't. I don't know what else to tell you. I could set them up in the pad menu under options in game though.

Would you share your prefs.dat file for other users of the wireless Xbox360pad (also I could see where the differrence is)? If you don't want to upload it somewhere, you can also open it with Notepad and copy&paste the contend in a forum post. That way I can make a file out of it and upload it myself.

Sure, this is the one you uploaded after I edited the settings in-game. I didn't map the back button to mobile phone, I mapped it to the menu. I also didn't map the L3 button to focus toggle. Also, my sound and video settings are set as well:

Reason: wrapped prefs.dat in code box (for later use :D)

OK, thank you.

As for the sticks and the D-Pad, the other prefs.dat would have been working for you.
But the real strange thing is with the buttons, my prefs.dat speaks German in that matter , so "Button" in your file is called in my file "Taste". These developers are obviously slightly deranged using different languages in a config file. I mean my game isn't even a German version (if a German version even exists).

I need to upload a German and a English version, one for the wired Xbox360pad and one for the wireless pad and other Xinput controllers each. Other languages are obviously screwed.

The sticks weren't working with the prefs.dat I got from you, it looks like your's says "input "ctrl_left_stick_x"" after I set it up in-game it changes to "input "Pad X Axis." I know there was a european version of the game, as I imported a collector's edition that has the PEGI rating info on it. The version I am trying with it now is off of Steam and I am in the United States.

I also have the Steam version and nothing on it is German, well except of Taste in the prefs.dat.
I guess that it takes these informations somewhere form my Windows version.

There are two file to choose from, one uses these "ctrl_left_stick_x" which is for the wired Xbox360 pad and the other used "Pad X Axis" which works for other Xinput controllers including wireless Xbox360pad (note that I have changed the file structure now).
